the importance of Trimming your candles Wick

Untrimmed Wick (Left) vs. Trimmed Wick (Right)

When it comes to buying candles always remember to trim the wicks. Most people light them, blow them out, and repeat. However, proper wick trimming not only makes the candle last longer, but it also helps reach the maximum fragrance level; most importantly, it’s safer. All candles should never be burned for more than 4 hours at a time to maximize their lifespan.

On the left, is a wick that was not trimmed and burned for more than 4 hours. You’ll notice how large the end of the wick is. This will cause the flame to be bigger and produce some soot. On the right, is a candlewick that has been trimmed before burning and this is how it should look every time you burn it. Candles should be trimmed to 1/4” prior to lighting. We do not expect you to shove a ruler in the candle to verify but use your best judgment. We want to make sure you get the most out of our candles and with a wick trimmer or some small scissors this can be achieved.

Certain ones will do certain things as there’s no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to wicks. We use wicks based on our soy wax and fragrance load percentages. All candles come with a warning label on the bottle of the candle with instructions on how to care for your candle.
